   THE SECOND GENERATION Henry & Johanna had eight children 1. Harry Louis born 7 March 1896.  Known to the family as Lou he enlisted in the 9/57th Rifles, AIF in 30 April 1917, aged 21 years, using the given names Henry Louis although his birth cerificate  shows Harry Louis.  Note: this birth certificate also list his father Henry as Harry.  His next of kin is shown as Johanna and mailing address c/- Diamond Hill Post Office.  Lou sailed on the HMAT Suevic  from Melbourne on 21 June 1917.  Lou later married Freda ? and they had two children; Harold and Coral. Lou died in 1971 and is buried in the Eaglehawk cemetary Symons Lawn, Section F, Grave 64.  Freda died in 1988 and is buried with Lou. 2. Kathleen; Kathleen had one child William (Boysie) and she kept house for brother Reginald and son William at 53 Skene Street (renumbered 6).  Kathleen later married John Morgan and they eventually moved to Tallangatta. 3. Beatrix married Edward Henry Teasdale and had two children; Gordon and Shirley. 4. Reginald Leo:  Reg never married.  In partnership with Nick Davey and with his brothers’ help both physically and finacially, he established a grocerery shop “Davey & Waddington” at 354 Hargreaves Street.  An extensive delivery network was built up which was serviced initially by horse and a cart and later by van. Every week Reg would would visit his customers to collect their grocery order which would then be delivered.  At each house he would rattle off the various items available...tea, coffee, sugar, flour etc. Reg was prominent in civic affairs and ran, unsuccessfully, for city council a number of times. Reg passed away in December 1960 and is buried in the Bendigo cemetary. Lawn F4 Grave 39334. 5. Frederick Norman; Fred worked on a milk cart, sold insurance and also worked with Reg. in the grocer shop.  He enlisted and served in the RAAF in New Guinea during World Warr II.  After the war he worked at the Ordinance factory (painter) and in the late fifties became the publican of the White Horse Hotel, California Gully. Fred married Eillen D’Arcy in 1936 and they had three children; John, Peter and Anthony.  After Fred died in 1962, Eil sold the pub and moved around finally settling in Queensland.  She died in 1997 in her ninetieth year.  Fred & Eil are both buried in the Bendigo cemetery - grave #39702. 6. Paul Vincent; Paul was a professional gardener who operated a plant nursery at the back of McIvor Road Hill; from memory you turned left just after cresting the hill.  Paul specialised in varieties of cacti which stood him in good stead when he later worked as head gardiner at ICI Melbourne.  It was here his gardening skills  made him sought after internationally - ref: BSI Journal - 1968 V18 (5) - page 104. Paul married Edna ?and had one daughter; Michele. 7. Harold Francis; born 19 August 1908.  We don’t what Harold’s occupation was but he was reputed to enjoy life to the full which was just as well.  Harold enlisted in the 2/29th AIF and went to Singapore.  He was reported to have died at the Fall of Singapore however Harold’s fate was much much worse.  Aunty Kath tried for years to find out what had happened to Harold but was always put off by Army authorities.  The truth was that Harold died in the Parit Sulong Massacre in Johor, Malaya.  Warning: You may find the descriptions disturbing.  Parit Sulong Massacre  Here is Harold’s inscription on the Singapore Memorial Roll of Honour. WADDINGTON, Private, HAROLD FRANCIS, VX/53606. A.I.F. 2/29 Bn. Australian Infantry. 22nd January 1942. Age 34. Son of Henry Fairbank Waddington and Johanna Katherine Waddington. Column 132. Perhaps it was a blessing that Kath didn’t find out the truth. Many years ago, Leon bumped into an old mate of Harold and the mate told Leon that his last memory of Harold before he left for the war was of Harold and a fellow cornet player, drunk, standing on their heads, feet against the barrack wall, playing triple tongue!  Nearly seventy years after his death, Harold was named as 4th Solo Cornet in the City of Greater Bendigo Brass Band’s “Band of the Century”. 8. John Stanley born 31 August 1913; Jack worked with Reg in the grocer shop.  He joined the Army and served in World War II.  He married Noeline Cotter and they had two children; Leon and Graham.  Jack and Noeline later operated a very successful mixed business in Carpenter Street.
